Although it is the smallest state in Nigeria by land area, it is one of the most populous. The state is named after the city of Lagos, which is the most populous city in Africa. This urban center is a major financial hub for the continent. Lagos serves as a key center for culture, education, and transportation in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the entire world.

The geography of Lagos State is defined by its relationship with water. Nearly 25 percent of the state's total area consists of lagoons, creeks, and rivers. The largest bodies of water in the interior are the Lagos and Lekki lagoons. These lagoons receive water from the Ogun and Osun rivers.

Because of this network, many rivers and creeks serve as essential transportation routes for people and goods. The landscape includes the tropical Nigerian lowland forests ecoregion. In these natural areas, you might find mona monkeys, tree pangolins, or hooded vultures. A transitory population of African forest elephants also exists here. Offshore, the waters are biodiverse with crocodiles and African manatees.

Lagos State is home to a very diverse population of many ethnic groups. The Yoruba people are the primary indigenous group living throughout the state. In the far west, the Ewe and Ogu peoples also reside. Since the nineteenth century, migration has brought many non-native Nigerian groups to the area. These include the Edo, Efik, Fulani, Hausa, Igbo, Ijaw, Ibibio, and Nupe peoples. There are also groups from outside modern Nigerian borders. The Saro and Amaro are descendants of formerly enslaved people who returned to Africa in the 1800s. Additionally, there are significant Middle Eastern communities, mainly Syrian and Lebanese Nigerians. Recent immigrants also arrive from China, Ghana, India, Togo, and the United Kingdom.

The history of the region involves many different powers and changes. Before the Portuguese arrived, the area was known as Eko. This name referred mainly to the island where the Awori people first settled. The Awori were hunters and fishermen who came from Ile-Ife. In 1760, the Portuguese adopted the name Lagos.

During the pre-colonial period, the area consisted of fishing villages and ports. These were controlled at various times by the Benin Empire and the Oyo Empire. In 1851, the British Royal Navy conducted the "Reduction of Lagos" to suppress the Atlantic slave trade. Following this, the British installed a cooperative Oba and signed a treaty. By 1861, the Lagos Treaty of Cession formally established the Lagos Colony.

The modern political structure of the state was shaped by several major shifts. In 1906, the colony became part of the Southern Nigeria Protectorate. It later merged into British Nigeria in 1914 with Lagos as the capital. After Nigeria gained independence in 1960, Lagos remained the capital. On 27 May 1967, the state was officially formed through a new decree. This decree restructured Nigeria into a federation of 12 states. At first, the city of Lagos and the Federal Government administered the capital directly. The state capital was later moved to Ikeja in 1976. Finally, the federal seat of government moved to Abuja on 12 December 1991.

Lagos State contains several distinct and important cities. Lagos is the largest city and a massive conurbation.

Ikeja serves as the state capital and is a planned commercial town. It houses the Murtala Mohammed International Airport and several famous cultural landmarks. Lekki is a peninsula in the southeast that is largely under construction. It is approximately 70 to 80 km long and 10 km wide.

Another important area is Epe, which is known as the fishing capital of Lagos. It features the state's largest seafood market. Ikorodu is a large city located along the Lagos Lagoon. Even the coastline is changing through the Eko Atlantic project. This planned city is being built on land reclaimed from the Atlantic Ocean to stop coastal erosion.

The economic significance of Lagos State cannot be overstated. It is a major financial center with a massive gross domestic product. In 2025, the GDP was estimated to be over US$250 billion. This economy is driven by a bustling port, a strong manufacturing sector, and a thriving tech scene. To understand its scale, its economy is comparable to the GDP of countries like Ghana, Angola, and Ethiopia. Despite challenges like overcrowding and heavy traffic, the state has the highest Human Development Index in Nigeria. It also maintains the highest literacy rate in the country.
