Lagos is a massive metropolitan port city in southwestern Nigeria.

It is one of the most important urban areas on the African continent. The city is classified as a megacity because of its enormous population. It is also one of the fastest-growing megacities in the entire world. Lagos serves as a critical economic hub for both Lagos State and Nigeria. It holds a major role in African finance, technology, and commerce. The city also influences art, fashion, and politics across the continent.

The geography of Lagos is shaped by water and coastal landforms. The area features many creeks that fringe the southwest mouth of the Lagos Lagoon. These waters are protected from the Atlantic Ocean by barrier islands. Long sand spits, such as Bar Beach, stretch east and west of the lagoon mouth.

Because of the heavy port traffic and large population, it is a Medium-Port Megacity. The city is often divided into two main geographical parts. These are known as the Island and the Mainland. The Island was the original center of the city. Rapid urbanization caused the city to expand west across the lagoon to the Mainland.

Metropolitan Lagos is actually an urban agglomeration or conurbation. This means it is a continuous built-up area made of many different parts. The metropolitan area includes 16 Local Government Areas, or LGAs.

These LGAs include Ikeja, which is the capital of Lagos State. While the metropolitan area covers only 37% of the total land in Lagos State, it holds about 85% of its people. The city is also part of the Abidjan–Lagos Corridor. This is an emerging transnational megalopolis that includes parts of five different sovereign states.

The history of Lagos began with the Awori people in the 15th century. The Awori are an Ijebu subgroup of the Yoruba people. They originally lived on a coastal farmstead. In the Yoruba language, a farmstead is called an Ereko. This word is the origin of the indigenous name Eko.

The name Lagos likely comes from the Portuguese word for "lakes." It was probably named after Lagos, Portugal. This occurred during the 15th century when Portuguese maritime expeditions traveled the African coast.

Lagos has held great political importance for Nigeria. It served as the national capital for many years. However, the government decided to move the capital to Abuja in December 1991.

This decision followed an act passed in 1976. Even without being the capital, Lagos remains a financial giant. It has the second-highest Gross Domestic Product, or GDP, in Africa. The city also contains one of the largest and busiest seaports on the continent.

Population growth in Lagos is incredibly rapid and sometimes controversial. Estimates for the population vary between different groups. In 2006, the federal census counted about 9 million people. However, the Lagos State Government disputed this number. They released data suggesting the metropolitan area had 16 million residents. Recent estimates suggest the greater Lagos area may have reached 28 million people by 2022.

The area grows by about 3,000 people every single day. This constant influx of people is driven by economic opportunities. This growth may have even made Lagos more populous than Kinshasa.

Today, the city is a center for many different activities. You can find the Murtala Muhammed International Airport here. It is one of the busiest airports in Africa.
