It is situated on both banks of the Ogun River. The city lies within a fertile region of wooded savanna. This landscape is characterized by large masses of grey granite.

Historically, the city was protected by mud walls extending 18 miles. Today, the city has expanded significantly into the neighboring Odeda area. As of 2022, the estimated population reached approximately 735,000 inhabitants.

The geography of the area plays a major role in its economy. The soil is fertile, which supports many different types of agriculture. Local trade includes items such as palm oil, natural rubber, and yams. Farmers also grow rice, cassava, maize, cotton, and kola nuts. Cocoa is a very important export from this location.

Some crops have a specific history in this region. Missionaries introduced rice and cotton to the area in the 1850s. These crops, along with indigo dye, became integral to the local economy.

The city also supports various industrial activities. Local industries include sawmills, breweries, and plastics manufacturing. There are also factories for aluminum products and fruit canning. To the south of the town, people work in the Aro granite quarries. Water for the city comes from the Oyan River Dam. This dam crosses the Oyan River, which is a tributary of the Ogun River. The dam is located about 20 km northwest of the city center.

The history of Abeokuta is a story of migration and defense. Early settlements were formed by Yoruba migrants. In the 13th century, the Orile Egba community was founded by the Eso Ikoyi Chiefs. This group left the Oyo empire to live in the forest. Later, the Orile Egba was destroyed during the Yoruba Civil Wars of the 19th century. This conflict forced people to find new ways to live and protect themselves.

Abeokuta was officially founded around 1830 as a replacement for Orile Egba. The Egba people chose this specific location for its defensive advantages. They were refugees seeking protection from slave raiders from Dahomey.

The hilly terrain of Olumo Rock provided a natural refuge. People took shelter among the rocks to escape various wars. The city functioned as a federation of communities within a town wall. This structure helped the Egba people manage their growing population.

During the colonial era, the city saw many changes in leadership and law. In 1893, the Alake signed an alliance with the British governor. This agreement formalized the Egba United Government. In 1914, the British incorporated Egba lands into the colony of Nigeria. This period also saw significant social resistance. The Adubi War of 1918 was an uprising related to taxation and British rule. Later, in the 1940s, the Abeokuta Women's Revolt challenged unfair colonial taxes.

Modern Abeokuta is a center for education and tourism. The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, was established in 1988.
