The name of the city has deep roots in the local environment. It is derived from the Okaan tree. In ancient times, a large number of these trees grew in the region. During the period of British rule, a forest of Okaan trees stood where the city was later rebuilt. This natural history gave the area its name. The city is considered a relatively new agricultural center. Historically, the area was part of the Montgomery District. It also once contained a large saltpeter refinery.
