Geographically, the city has a unique landscape. One-fourth of the city area lies within the Cholistan Desert. This desert setting creates a distinct environment for the urban area. The city's local administration is organized into nine separate union councils.

The history of this region reaches back thousands of years. Ancient people have inhabited the area for a very long time. The Pattan Minara is a notable ancient tower located 8 km east of the city center. Many believe this tower represents the remains of a 5,000-year-old monastery. The minara was built during the Mauryan period around 250 BC. This was part of the Hakrra valley civilization. Such deep roots show how important this land has been for many eras.

The city itself was founded much later in the year 1751. At its founding, it was known by the name Noshehra. During this era, the region belonged to the Multan province of the Mughal Empire. The city later became part of the Bahawalpur State. In 1943, the area was transitioned into a separate district. This change helped define the modern political boundaries of the region.

The name of the city changed due to both politics and logistics. Railway administrators wanted to change the name of the town. They felt the name Noshehra was too similar to another place called Nowshera. In 1881, Sadeq Mohammad Khan IV decided to rename the area. He chose the name Rahim Yar Khan to honor his son. This new name remains the official designation for the city today.

The population of Rahim Yar Khan is quite large. According to the 2023 census, the population reached 519,261 people. The economy is heavily tied to the land. About 65% of the population is employed in agricultural work. This means farming is a primary way of life for most residents. The city is also home to many notable people. These include the singer Aima Baig and the actor Saima Akram Chaudhry. Other figures include the social activist Muniba Mazari and Lieutenant general Talha Chahour.

Language is a diverse part of life in the city. The 2023 census provides specific data on the languages spoken. Punjabi is the most common, spoken by 51.44% of the population. Saraiki is the second most common at 35.14%. Urdu is spoken by 8.80% of the residents. Pashto is spoken by 1.86% of the people. An additional 2.76% speak other languages. Some residents do not consider their mother tongue to be among the main options.

Transportation links connect the city to the rest of the country. The city has a railway station for train travel.

The Shaikh Zayed International Airport also provides vital connections. It handles both domestic and international flights for the local population. Flights to Karachi depart on a daily basis. Flights to Lahore occur twice a week. Flights to Islamabad are scheduled once a week. However, the airport faced challenges recently. It was partially damaged during the India-Pakistan conflict in 2025.
