Many people live and work in this busy region. In the 2023 census, the population was 519,261 people. Most people here work in agriculture. About 65% of the population has jobs in farming. People speak many different languages in the city. Punjabi is spoken by 51.44% of the people. Saraiki is spoken by 35.14% of the people. Urdu is spoken by 8.80% of the people. Other languages like Pashto are also used.

The area has a very deep history. People have lived near this land for a very long time. An ancient tower called Pattan Minara stands 8 km east of the city. It may be the remains of a monastery from 5,000 years ago. This tower was built during the Mauryan period in 250 BC. The city was founded in 1751 under the name Noshehra. At that time, the region was part of the Mughal Empire.

The name of the city has changed over the years. It was once part of the Bahawalpur State. In 1881, Sadeq Mohammad Khan IV changed the name. He named it Rahim Yar Khan to honor his son. Railway workers also wanted a name change. They felt Noshehra sounded too much like another town called Nowshera. This helped the city have its own unique name.

Travelers can reach the city in several ways. There is a railway station for trains.
