The name Kasur comes from Arabic and Persian words. These words mean "palaces" or "forts." Long ago, the city was a group of small forts. These forts were called kots. There were about twelve of these areas. They were called mahallahs, which means abodes. These were named after different Pashtun families. The Mughal Emperor Akbar even ordered these to be built. Today, some of these old forts are damaged. They show how the city grew from strong, small places into a big town.

History tells us that many different groups ruled this land. Long ago, the Maurya and Gupta empires were here. Even a Chinese pilgrim named Xuanzang visited in 633 AD. He described the area as being full of ruins and mosques. Later, the Kheshgi tribe arrived from Afghanistan in 1525. They helped establish the city as a fortified place. Over the years, the Sikh Empire and the British also ruled the region. In 1947, many people moved during the Partition of India. Some moved to India, while others moved to Kasur.

In fact, one third of all leather tanning in Pakistan happens in Kasur. The city is also a major center for trading hides. People collect them and bring them to the many markets here. Recently, a large gas pipeline was built to connect the city to Karachi. This helps bring energy to the area.
