Agriculture is the most important way people live here. The soil and water help farmers grow much food. Because of this, people call it a "breadbasket." This means it provides food for both India and Pakistan. This way of life grew from the old river settlements. The rivers also served as a path to the Near East. This helped trade and travel for a very long time.

This land has a very deep and busy history. The Indus Valley civilization lived here a long time ago. Later, many different groups moved into the region. Alexander the Great once invaded this area in the 4th century BCE. He fought a famous battle against King Porus.
