Being Punjabi is about more than just where you live. It is also about speaking the Punjabi language. People can be Punjabi because of their language, their home, or their culture. This identity is very strong and brings people together. It does not depend on one specific religion or history.

The name Punjab tells a story about the land itself. In the Persian language, the word means "the land of five waters."

This refers to five important rivers. These rivers are the Beas, Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, and Sutlej. They all flow into the huge Indus River. The Sutlej is the largest of these five rivers. Ancient poems like the Mahabharata also mention these waters. Even ancient Greeks had a name for this river region.

History shows how Punjabi society has changed over many years. Long ago, people belonged to small groups called clans. These clans were sometimes called biradari, which means "brotherhood." Each person was closely tied to their specific clan. Starting in the 18th century, these groups began to join together. They moved from small tribal groups to one large society. Today, community and group unity are the main pillars of their life.

Religion is a big part of life in the Punjab region. The area has seen many different faiths over time. Ancient Vedic religions were practiced there a long time ago. Later, Buddhism and Jainism grew in the region as well. Islam arrived in the 8th century and became very common. In the 1700s, the Sikh faith also began to rise. Today, most Punjabis in Pakistan follow Islam. In the Indian state of Punjab, many people are Sikh or Hindu.
