History shows that the Javanese ancestors moved to Java a long time ago. They likely came from Taiwan and traveled through the Philippines. They arrived on Java between 1,500 BC and 1,000 BC. Over many years, they built very strong kingdoms. Ancient kingdoms like Singhasari and Majapahit were very powerful. These empires controlled much of the sea and trade in the region. They were known as maritime empires because they were masters of the ocean.

These ancient kingdoms built amazing things that we can still see. They made huge religious monuments like Borobudur and Prambanan. These are among the largest temples in the whole world. In the past, many Hindu and Buddhist temples lived together in the Java valley. Some of these were even buried by a huge eruption of Mount Merapi in 1006 AD. Later, Islam became a major part of life in many port towns. Today, most Javanese people are Sunni Muslims.

Today, Javanese people live in many different places. Many have moved away from Java to other parts of Indonesia. Some Javanese people live in countries far away like the Netherlands or Suriname. You can also find them in Singapore, Malaysia, and Egypt. Even though they live far apart, they keep their traditions alive. Their culture still has a big influence on many neighbors in Southeast Asia. It is a history that continues to grow every day.
