Javanese language

language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Javanese is a massive and important language. It is the native tongue for more than 68 million people. This makes it the largest Austronesian language by number of speakers. Most people who speak it live on the island of Java in Indonesia.

You can find Javanese speakers in many places around the world. They live in Malaysia and Singapore. There are even communities in Suriname, Sri Lanka, and New Caledonia. In Suriname, a local version called Suriname Javanese has even developed. It is a language that connects many different people across many lands.

There are several ways to write the Javanese language. Most people today use the Latin script for their writing. However, the traditional Javanese script is still very important. In places like Yogyakarta, students learn this script in school.

Some people also use an Arabic script to write it. Using different scripts shows the long history of the language. These different ways of writing help keep the culture alive for new generations. It is a way to honor the past while living in the present.

Javanese has a long and rich history. It was once the court language in Palembang, South Sumatra. This lasted until the late 18th century when the palace was taken by the Dutch. The language has also been used as a literary language in Madura, Bali, and Lombok.

In the 19th century, many people from Java moved to Suriname. They were part of a group brought by the Dutch to work on plantations. This is why Javanese is still spoken in South America today. These historical moves helped spread the language far from its home island.

People speak Javanese in many different styles called dialects. There are three main groups: Western, Central, and Eastern Javanese.

Some dialects, like the one from Surabaya, might be hard for others to understand. Standard Javanese is a very special style. It was developed at the royal courts of Yogyakarta and Surakarta. This style is known for being very refined. It uses two levels of speech to show respect to others. The everyday level is called ngoko, while the polite level is called krama.

Javanese is a huge part of life in Indonesia. About 45% of the people in Indonesia are of Javanese descent. All seven Indonesian presidents since 1945 have also been of Javanese descent. This has given the language a deep influence on Indonesian, the national language.

Javanese is the 22nd largest language in the world by native speakers. It is also the seventh largest language without official national status. Whether through spoken words or written scripts, Javanese remains a powerful way for people to share their stories and their pride.
