People often say Dutch sits "roughly in between" English and German. It is a close relative to both of those languages. It shares many traits with German, like having two or three grammatical genders.

This language connects millions of people across many different continents.

Learning how Dutch works involves looking at its unique structure. It is part of the West Germanic group, which includes English and Scots.

Dutch does not use the High German consonant shift. It also does not use the Germanic umlaut as a way to show grammar. Unlike some other languages, it has mostly left behind the subjunctive mood. It has also simplified its morphology, which is the way words change shape. This includes a system called cases that has been largely leveled out. The vocabulary is mostly Germanic in its roots. However, it uses slightly more Romance loan words than German does. It uses far fewer than English does.

The history of Dutch goes back many centuries. The early form of the language came from Franconian dialects. These were spoken by the Salian Franks during the 5th century. Over fifteen centuries, these dialects changed into Middle Dutch and then Modern Dutch. This change was very gradual rather than happening all at once. The term "Dutch" itself has a very old meaning. It comes from a Proto-Germanic word that meant "people." In the Middle Ages, it meant the language of the common people. This was used to distinguish it from Latin, which was the language of the Church.

Dutch has a history of spreading to many distant places. It was once an official language in South Africa until 1925. At that time, it was replaced by Afrikaans. Afrikaans is a daughter language that grew from Cape Dutch dialects. Today, Afrikaans is spoken by at least 16 million people. In South America, Dutch is the native language for most people in Suriname. It is also an official language in Caribbean countries like Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten.

In Asia, Dutch was used by a small group in the Dutch East Indies. This area is now mostly Indonesia. Even though it was banned in 1957, the ban was later lifted. About one-fifth of the Indonesian language can be traced back to Dutch words.

Dutch continues to be an important language in the modern world. It is an official language in several different countries and municipalities. For example, it is official in the Dutch Caribbean municipalities of Saba, Bonaire, and St. Eustatius. Many people also live in places like the United States, Canada, and Australia. In these countries, up to half a million native speakers reside.

Even though some small groups of speakers are fading in France and Germany, the language remains strong. It is a living part of the Dutch Language Union. This group helps manage the language across the different places where it is spoken. Dutch remains a vital way for people to share their culture and history.
