It is the main language in the Indian state of Kerala. Many people also speak it in Lakshadweep and Puducherry. You can find Malayalam speakers all over the world today. This includes people living in many big Indian cities like Mumbai and Delhi. There are also many Malayali people living in Persian Gulf countries.

This language is very special to India. It is one of the 22 scheduled languages and one of 11 classical languages.

The name Malayalam has a very interesting meaning. Some say it comes from words meaning "the mountain region." This fits the land well because of the many hills.

People sometimes used the name Malabar to talk about this area in trade. Malabar also means "the land of hills." In the past, the people of Kerala were called malaiyāḷar. This name means "mountain people." The language has had many different names over the centuries. It was once called Kerala Bhasha or even just Tamil by some people.

How Malayalam began is a big question for scholars.

One common view is that it grew from an old coastal dialect of Middle Tamil. This separation likely happened between the 9th and 13th centuries. Other scholars think it grew from a much older root called Proto-Dravidian. They believe the two languages might have split much earlier. The mountains of the Western Ghats helped keep the language unique. These mountains separated the coast from the rest of the Indian peninsula. This isolation helped the spoken words change in their own way.

Writing Malayalam has changed a lot over a long time.

The earliest script used was called Vatteluttu. The modern script is based on Vatteluttu but uses extra letters. These extra letters come from the Grantha script to help with new words.

These plates are some of the oldest records of Old Malayalam. In the 19th century, a man named A. R. Raja Raja Varma wrote a book on grammar. This book helped shape the modern way the language works.

Malayalam has a very rich tradition of stories and poems.

One of the oldest separate works is called Ramacharitam. In the 14th century, writers used a style called Manipravalam. This name means "diamond-coral" or "ruby-coral." It was a way to mix Tamil and Sanskrit together beautifully.

Writers like Rama Panikkar were very famous during this time. Some people compare his skill to famous poets in English. Even the way people used money showed the language. You can see Malayalam letters on old Travancore Rupees. This shows how the language is part of daily life.
