language culture Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Guarani is a beautiful language from South America. It belongs to a large family called Tupi–Guarani. Many people feel a great sense of pride when they speak it. In Paraguay, it is an official language alongside Spanish. Most people there use it in their daily lives. Some people in rural areas speak only Guarani. It is also spoken in parts of Brazil, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Learning how Guarani works is like watching a builder at work. The language is agglutinative, which means it builds big words from small parts. These small parts are called morphemes. You can even add parts to nouns to show time. For example, you can add a part to mean "ex" or "former." You can even show someone was going to be something but did not finish.

The history of the language is very interesting. Long ago, Jesuit missionaries used a special version of Guarani. They used the language's building blocks to create new words for European ideas. One way they did this was with the word for "communion." They used a special term based on the word for God. Later, people living outside the missions used more Spanish words. This created a different way of speaking.

Today, many people speak a mix of Spanish and Guarani. This mixture is called Jopará, which means "mixture" in the language. It is estimated that 90% of people in Paraguay speak Jopará. The language has also gained official status in new places. It is the second official language of Corrientes in Argentina. It is also an official language of the city of Tacuru in Brazil.

Guarani has a very special sound. Every syllable ends in a vowel, which makes the speech flow. This means you will not find syllables that end in a consonant. The language also uses something called nasal harmony. This is when the nasal sound spreads through a word. It is quite different from how English or Spanish sounds work. This unique way of speaking helps keep the culture alive and strong.
