It is very important in India. It is one of the 22 official languages of the country. It is also the official language in the state of Gujarat. People also use it in the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. Gujarati is a very large language with many speakers. It is the sixth most spoken language in India. About 55.5 million people speak it as their first language.

Learning how the language changed is like watching a tree grow. It started from a very old language called Sanskrit. Scholars look at three main stages of its history. First, there was Old Gujarati, which was spoken by the Gurjars. This version was used for writing as early as the 12th century.

Later, Middle Gujarati grew from the Rajasthani language between the years 1500 and 1800. Finally, Modern Gujarati began around the year 1800. During this time, many sounds in the words began to change. For example, words started to end with consonants instead of vowels.

Many famous people have used this language. Mahatma Gandhi was a native speaker of Gujarati. He used the language to write many important things. In 1936, he helped create the spelling rules we use today.

Another famous leader, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, also spoke Gujarati. Even though the language has many rules, it is still growing. In fact, it is one of the fastest-growing languages in India. It sits in third place for growth, right behind Hindi and Kashmiri. This shows how much people value and use it every day.

Gujarati is not just found in one place. It has traveled all over the world with people. Many speakers live in Mumbai and Karachi. You can find large groups of speakers in North America too. In the United States, many people speak it in New Jersey and New York City. In Canada, it is very common in the Greater Toronto Area.

It is also spoken in the United Kingdom. In London, it is the fourth most common South Asian language. Many people from East Africa also brought the language to the UK.

There are also different ways to speak Gujarati depending on where you live. Some people speak a standard version used in news and schools. Others speak local versions like Amdawadi Gujarati in Ahmedabad. There is also Kathiawari, which is spoken in the Kathiawar region.
