Hindi is a major language used by millions of people. It is an Indo-Aryan language written in the Devanagari script.

In India, it is an official language for the government. It acts as a lingua franca, which is a common language used by people who speak different native tongues. This makes it very useful across northern, central, western, and eastern India. It is even an additional official language in West Bengal. Hindi is also one of the 22 scheduled languages of the Republic of India.

Learning how Hindi works involves looking at its unique sounds and writing. The language is based on the Khariboli dialect from the Ganges-Yamuna Doab region.

Over many centuries, the way words were spoken changed quite a bit. For example, some old words lost their final vowels. Other words had their vowels lengthened or their consonants changed. These shifts helped turn ancient forms into the modern language we hear today. Standard Hindi was built by using more Sanskrit words in its formal vocabulary. This helped distinguish it from other regional ways of speaking.

History shows how Hindi has changed through different eras. It began as a descendant of an early form called Vedic Sanskrit. By the 7th century CE, it had moved through stages called Shauraseni Prakrit and Apabhraṃśa. During the time of the Delhi Sultanate, Hindi grew even more. It mixed with Persian words to create a common form called Hindustani.

This shared language became a symbol of unity during the Indian Independence movement. Later, in the 19th century, it became a true literary language. Famous early books include Prēm Sāgar by the writer Lallu Lal.

There are many important facts about where Hindi is spoken today. It is the fourth-most-spoken first language in the entire world. If you include Urdu speakers, it becomes the third-most-spoken language.

In India, it is the official language in ten states, including Bihar and Rajasthan. It is also an official language in Fiji, where about 380,000 people speak it. Some people speak Fiji Hindi, which comes from the Awadhi dialect. You can even find Hindi speakers in South Africa and Mauritius. In Nepal, many people use it as a second language.

Hindi connects to many things you might already know. You can hear its influence in the songs and movies of Bollywood. This common vocabulary helps people from different places understand each other. Even the name "Hindi" has a long journey. It comes from Old Persian words that traced back to the Sanskrit name "Sindhu." This name referred to the Indus River.

Just as the word "India" comes from that same river, the name of the language is tied to the land itself.
