Dutch-language literature is a vast collection of written works. It includes everything from ancient poems to modern books. About 23 million people speak Dutch as their first language today. These stories come from many different lands. They are written in the Netherlands and Belgium. They also come from Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles. In the past, writing also came from South Africa and Indonesia.

Even people moving to new places can join this tradition. Writers like Anne Frank and Kader Abdolah have added their voices. This makes the literature a global treasure.

In the very beginning, writing worked differently. Before the 11th century, most literature was oral. This means people spoke or sang the words out loud. They used poetry to help them remember long stories. Many important texts were written in Latin instead of Dutch. This was because Latin was used for science and religion. One famous early text is called the Leiden Willeram. It is a manuscript from the end of the 11th century.

It shows how scribes tried to translate old ideas into their own local speech.

As time passed, the way people wrote changed. In the 12th and 13th centuries, writers created chivalric romances. These were stories about brave knights. They also wrote hagiographies, which are stories about the lives of saints. At first, these books were mostly for noblemen. Later, the audience grew to include the bourgeoisie. This is a group of middle-class people in growing towns.

One famous writer from this time was Beatrice of Nazareth. She was the first known prose writer in Dutch. She wrote a book called the Seven Ways of Holy Love.

By the middle ages, Dutch literature became very active. A man named Jacob van Maerlant became a huge figure. Some people call him the "father of Dutch poetry." He wrote many books, like The Flower of Nature. Around 1440, new groups called rederijkerskamers began to form. These were known as Chambers of Rhetoric. They were clubs for middle-class writers. These groups often prepared plays for the public to watch.

Later, Joost van den Vondel became a great playwright and poet.

History has also shaped these stories through hard times. During the 19th century, a new language called Afrikaans began to emerge. It grew from 17th-century Dutch. In the 20th century, writers faced the challenges of World War II. Anne Frank wrote a famous diary during this time. Other writers like Marga Minco wrote about their experiences too. After the war, a style called "shocking realism" became popular.
