In the very beginning, stories were very different. The Old High German period lasted until about the middle of the 11th century. One famous work is the Hildebrandslied. It is a heroic poem that uses special sounds called alliteration. Another important story is the Heliand. This is a life of Christ written like a heroic epic.

As time went on, new ways of writing appeared. The Middle High German period began in the 12th century. There was a "golden age" between the years 1170 and 1230. During this time, poets wrote songs about love called Minnesang. Walther von der Vogelweide was a very important poet. Writers also wrote romances about knights.

The Baroque period lasted from 1600 to 1720. This was a very busy time for writers. Many wrote about the hard experiences of the Thirty Years' War. One famous novel from this time is Simplicius Simplicissimus. Later, in the 1700s, a movement called Sturm und Drang began. This means "Storm and Stress." It focused on big, strong emotions.
