It includes works written in the Italian language. It also covers books written in regional dialects. These are local ways of speaking found in different parts of Italy. This writing started to grow in the 12th century. At that time, people began using these local languages for art. One of the very first documents we still have is called the Ritmo laurenziano.

This long history shows how people use words to share their world.

Writing in Italy changed many times over the years. In the beginning, many poets used a language called Occitan.

These poets were called troubadours, or trovatori in Italian. They often traveled to different cities to perform. Some were even leaders, called podestà-troubadours, who wrote political poems. Later, writers began to use native Italian instead of foreign tongues. They moved from mixing languages to using a single, clear style. This helped create a strong sense of shared culture.

History shows us how important certain groups were to literature. In 1230, a group called the Sicilian School began.

They were very important because they helped create a standard Italian. They wrote love songs that were more about deep feelings than physical desire. This style was later picked up by famous writers like Dante. During the Renaissance, leaders like Lorenzo de' Medici helped art grow.

This era focused on human ideas and great history. It was a time when drama also became very popular.

Many famous names helped shape these many different eras. Niccolò Machiavelli and Francesco Guicciardini helped start the science of history. In the 1700s, the Age of Enlightenment brought new ideas to Europe. Giuseppe Parini was a leading figure during this literary revival. Later, writers like Alessandro Manzoni led a movement called Romanticism.

In the 1900s, many new styles emerged. Authors like Umberto Eco became famous worldwide with his detective stories.

These writers used many different ways to tell their tales.

Today, we can see the lasting impact of these traditions. Italian literature has connected many people across many centuries. Six different authors have even won the Nobel Prize in Literature.

These winners include names like Luigi Pirandello and Dario Fo. Their success shows that Italian stories matter to the whole world. From ancient Latin traditions to modern novels, the writing continues to evolve. It remains a way for people to express their love for liberty and equality.
