Many writers have used the language to share their ideas. Some wrote about the kings and the growth of the land. Others wrote about love and daily life. This variety makes the literature very special to the people who speak the language.

In the beginning, poets used a style called Galician-Portuguese. They wrote songs in royal courts in northern Portugal.

Some songs were called cantiga d'amor, which were about love. Others were cantiga d'amigo, which sounded like songs from local folk traditions. There were even cantigas d'escarnio e maldizer, which were songs used to tease or insult. These songs were often kept in large books called codices. One famous book is the Cancioneiro da Ajuda from the late 1200s.

The 1500s were known as a Golden Age for Portugal. This was the time of the Renaissance. During this era, many great thinkers and writers lived in Portugal. Luís de Camões wrote a very famous epic poem called Os Lusíadas.

This poem is a huge part of the nation's identity. Another important person was Gil Vicente. He is called the father of the Portuguese stage. He wrote many plays, such as the Barcas trilogy. His plays showed the customs and language of all kinds of people.

As time moved on, new styles of writing became popular. The 1600s brought the Baroque style to Portugal. In the 1700s, writers used Neoclassicism to try and reach the high quality of the Golden Age. The 1800s saw the rise of Romanticism with writers like Almeida Garrett. This was followed by Realism in the late 1800s. Authors like Eça de Queiroz wrote novels that showed life in a very direct way. Each era changed how stories were told and how people felt about them.

Today, Portuguese literature continues to be celebrated around the world. In the 1900s, Fernando Pessoa became one of the most famous poets in the country. He is often mentioned alongside Camões as a great national poet. Later, José Saramago became a very important writer. He even won the Nobel Prize for Literature. These writers show how the language keeps changing. They connect the old traditions to the modern world through their prose and verse.
