"text": "Portuguese literature encompasses a vast body of written works produced in the Portuguese language. This includes writing from the many countries in the Lusophone world, such as Brazil and Angola. When scholars speak of Portuguese literature \"sensu stricto,\" they focus specifically on the literary history of the nation of Portugal. This tradition is defined by a deep variety of lyric poetry and significant historical writing. These texts document the lives of rulers, various conquests, and the era of global expansion.

\n\nThe foundation of this literature began with the Galician-Portuguese tradition. This was a medieval poetic style developed in Galicia and northern Portugal. Scholars suggest that indigenous popular poetry existed before any written records were made. The first datable poems appeared between approximately 1200 and 1225. These early works showed influences from Provence. The center of poetic activity eventually moved between the courts of Galicia and the court of Alfonso X, the Wise King of Castile and León. Later, poets practiced their craft in the court of Afonso III of Portugal.

\n\nMedieval lyric poetry was organized into distinct genres. The \"cantiga d'amor\" featured a male voice focusing on love. The \"cantiga d'amigo\" featured a female voice, though all the poets were actually male. These songs were likely rooted in local folksong. The third type was the \"cantigas d'escarnio e maldizer,\" which were songs of scorn or insult. The total body of medieval Galician-Portuguese lyric contains around 1,685 texts. Many of these were preserved in large manuscript collections called codices. Notable examples include the Cancioneiro da Ajuda from the late 13th century.

\n\nAs the 15th century progressed, troubadour verse declined. It was replaced by a different form of court poetry recorded in the \"Cancioneiro Geral.\" At the same time, common people developed ballad poetry known as the \"Romanceiro.\" These were lyrico-narrative poems about war, chivalry, adventure, and the sea. In the 16th century, Portugal entered a \"Golden Age\" during the Renaissance. This era produced a wide range of thinkers, including historians and theologians. The most famous work from this time is the national epic \"Os Lusíadas\" by Luís de Camões.

\n\nDrama also saw a major revolution during the Renaissance. Gil Vicente is recognized as the father of the Portuguese stage. He wrote forty-four pieces, including devotional works called \"autos,\" tragicomedies, and farces. His plays, such as the \"Barcas\" trilogy, mirrored the customs and language of all social classes. Following the Renaissance, the 17th century introduced the Baroque style. Many historians view this as a period of literary decadence. However, important writers like Father António Vieira still produced significant work during this time.

\n\nThe 18th century brought the Neoclassical movement. Writers in this period formed academies and \"literary Arcadias\" to recover the quality of the Golden Age. By the 19th century, these ideals were abandoned for Romanticism. Authors like Almeida Garrett and Alexandre Herculano led this change. In the second half of the 19th century, Realism emerged in novel-writing. Writers such as Eça de Queiroz used naturalistic features to depict life. This progression shows how literary movements react to the eras that came before them.\n\nIn the 20th century, Portuguese literature reached new heights of global recognition. Fernando Pessoa emerged as one of the greatest national poets. He is often ranked alongside Camões in importance to the nation. Later, prose fiction saw significant development through authors like António Lobo Antunes. Perhaps most notably, José Saramago won the Nobel Prize for Literature. These modern writers connect the ancient traditions of the Galician-Portuguese poets to the contemporary world. They ensure that the rich history of Portuguese expression continues to evolve.",
