This subject covers many different movements. Some people study rationalism, while others look at existentialism or critical theory. Even the Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard is often included because he studied German ideas so closely.

In the early days, thinkers focused on logic and science.

In the 1600s, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz became a major leader. He was both a philosopher and a mathematician. Leibniz believed God created the best possible world. He also had a theory about monads, which are tiny, eternal parts of the universe.

By the 1700s, new ways of thinking began to grow.

Immanuel Kant was one of the most important people in this era. In 1781, he published a famous book called *Critique of Pure Reason*. He wanted to know what humans can truly understand. Kant said our minds have limits on how they see the world. Because of his work, a movement called German Idealism started to grow. This movement linked ideas with art and politics.

Many different people led the German Idealism movement.

Johann Gottlieb Fichte believed the "I" or the self creates the world. Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling argued that nature and thought are actually the same thing. He even thought art could help us understand higher beings.

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel is often called the greatest of these idealists. Hegel believed reality is always moving and changing. He described this change happening in three stages: logic, nature, and spirit.

These German ideas connect to many things we study now. They helped create the way we teach economics and public administration. Thinkers like Christian Wolff were among the first to use German for school research.
