Long ago, Indonesia was a busy center for trade. Sailors came from China, India, Europe, and the Middle East. These travelers brought new ideas to the islands.

In the early 1900s, things began to change quickly. A group called Balai Pustaka was started to help people read. They were a government-run publisher that helped teach people through books.

During this time, the first modern novels appeared. One famous book is Sitti Nurbaya, written by Marah Roesli in 1922. Another important book was Azab dan Sengsara by Merari Siregar. These books were different because they talked about real life. They helped create a new way for people to tell stories.

Today, Indonesian literature keeps growing with many new voices. Writers belong to different groups called angkatan, or generations. These groups represent movements in how people write.
