arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Indonesian literature is a vast collection of written works from the Indonesian archipelago. It also includes writing from areas with common Malay language roots. This broad definition covers Maritime Southeast Asia, including Malaysia and Brunei. It even includes Malay-speaking populations in Singapore. The term covers writing in the modern Indonesian language. It also includes older Malay literature from the Dutch East Indies era.

This literature is a vital way for people to share their history and culture.

The development of this literature involves many complex layers. One major factor is the relationship between the Malay and Indonesian languages. In the 1930s, Malay was the lingua franca, or common language, of the region. At that time, a national Indonesian language was still developing. It is often hard to see where Malay ends and Indonesian begins. Regional languages also influence each other constantly. A story in one Indonesian language might exist in another variant.

This creates a deep web of connected stories across the islands.

Traditional literature is categorized by specific genres and forms. One major form is syair, which is traditional narrative poetry. Another is pantun, which consists of quatrains made of two disconnected couplets. Writers also use gurindam, which are brief aphorisms or short sayings. For longer stories, they use hikayat, which include fairy tales and chronicles. There are also babad, which are historical chronicles.

These forms allowed people to preserve their legends for many generations.

History shows that Indonesia was once a major center for global trade. Sailors from China, India, Europe, and the Middle East visited the islands. This history brought many cultural influences to the region. Later, the islands were colonies of the Netherlands and Japan. These colonial periods shaped how literature was produced and read. However, Indonesian writing maintained its own unique characteristics. It developed a separate path that remains distinct from its many influences.

In the early twentieth century, several factors helped create a national literature. National consciousness began to grow among educated Indonesians. At the same time, the Dutch established Balai Pustaka. This was a government-supervised publisher known as the Bureau for Popular Literature. It aimed to educate people through books and school libraries. However, Balai Pustaka also controlled what could be published. It blocked political criticism and religious controversy to maintain colonial order.

This era saw a shift from traditional poetry to modern fiction.

This period produced the first modern Indonesian novels. Merari Siregar wrote Azab dan Sengsara in 1920. This book was a break from the older Malay romance tradition. It used realism to address contemporary problems like forced marriage. Another famous author from this time was Marah Roesli. He wrote the well-known novel Sitti Nurbaya in 1922.

These authors helped move the literary tradition toward modern storytelling styles.

Modern Indonesian literature is organized into different movements called angkatan. These are known as generations, but they represent literary movements rather than strict dates. Some examples include the Generation of 1945 and the Reform Era Generation. These movements show how writing styles change over time. Today, the publishing industry is very large and active. In the early 2020s, Indonesia produced about 135,000 new book titles every year.
