Classical Malay emerged as a literary language in royal courts. These courts included the Johor and Malacca Sultanates. The Jawi script, which uses Arabic characters, became a dominant orthographic form. This period saw the integration of Islamic culture with local Malay traditions.\n\nDuring the colonial era, the Dutch had a significant impact on the language. The Dutch East India Company used Malay as an administrative language for trading. While Dutch was the language of a small elite, it heavily influenced Malay vocabulary.

The colonial government actually helped standardize Malay to use as a medium of communication. They promoted it through schools, missions, and state publishers like Balai Poestaka. In 1910, a teacher named Sasrasoeganda Koewatin wrote a Malay grammar book. This book used the Latin script and became a basis for modern Indonesian. This transition to the Western script helped modernize the language for widespread use.\n\nThe most defining moment for the language was the nationalist movement. In 1928, a group of young people made a historic commitment.
