Indonesia is a vast archipelago with hundreds of different musical styles. This diversity exists because the country contains many different tribes and ethnic groups. Each region maintains its own distinct culture and art. Traditional music often accompanies specific types of dance and theater.

Modern music in Indonesia is also shaped by foreign influences. These include sounds from America, Britain, Japan, Korea, and India. Today, Indonesian contemporary music is popular in neighboring Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei.

Many Indonesian musical traditions rely on percussion instruments. These include drums and various types of gongs.

One of the most complex ensembles is the gamelan orchestra. This orchestra is found in Java and Bali. Another important instrument is the gong chime. A gong chime is a set of small, high-pitched bossed pot gongs. Musicians place these gongs in order of pitch on wooden frames. These frames can be circular or rectangular. One to four musicians typically play them using two padded sticks.

Specific instruments serve different roles within various musical ensembles. The bonang is a gong instrument used in gamelan. The talempong is similar to the bonang but belongs to the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra. Talempongs can be made from brass, wood, or stone. They are often played with a wooden rod to accompany dances like the Tari Piring.

In North Sulawesi, the Minahasa people use the kulintang. This is a bronze and wooden percussion instrument. It consists of 5 to 9 graduated pot gongs laid horizontally on a frame. The lowest gong is placed on the player's left. Kulintang music serves as social entertainment for the community. It is unique because it is considered public music. Everyone is allowed to participate, and audience members are expected to join in.

Bamboo is another essential material for Indonesian instruments. The angklung is a bamboo instrument from the Sundanese people of West Java. It consists of bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame. Each angklung plays only one note. Players create sound by shaking the instrument to vibrate the tubes.

The suling is a bamboo flute used in many regions. The sound changes based on how the player uses their fingers. A shorter suling produces a higher pitch. In West Java, the kacapi suling combines the kacapi zither with the suling flute. This music is highly improvisational and features a slow tempo.

The history of Indonesian music is very deep. The musical identity began when Bronze Age cultures migrated to the islands during the 2nd or 3rd century BC.

The angklung existed even before the Hindu era. During the Sundanese kingdoms between the 12th and 16th centuries, the angklung had many uses. It was used in farming celebrations to worship Dewi Sri, the Goddess of Rice. People played it to ask for blessings for their plants. It was also used as a trigger for the spirit of war.

String and drum instruments offer different textures to the music. The sasando is a plucked string instrument from Rote island. It uses a bamboo cylinder and a resonator made of dried lontar leaves.

Drums like the kendang are used across the archipelago. In Lombok, the gendang beleq features very large drums. These drums have wood frames and goat skin heads.

Drummers must have great stamina to march and dance while playing.

Music plays a vital role in social unity and individual status. Kulintang performances bring people from different regions together. This helps unify communities that might not usually interact. For musicians, performing is a way to receive prestige and respect from their community. Music is not just entertainment; it is a way to connect people through shared tradition and skill.
