Many countries are found here. These include Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It also includes Brunei, East Timor, Singapore, and Papua New Guinea. The land and sea area is more than 2 million square kilometers.

This place is very active because of the Earth's movements. It is one of the most active volcanic regions in the world. Many volcanoes are found in Java and Sumatra. You can also find them in the Lesser Sunda Islands. These movements also create very large mountains.

Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia, is a very high peak. Puncak Jaya in Papua, Indonesia, is another high mountain. Other tall peaks include Puncak Mandala and Puncak Trikora.

People have used many names for this place over time. In the 19th century, Europeans used the name Malay Archipelago. This name came from an old idea about a Malay race. Later, a scientist named Alfred Wallace used this name for his book. He also called the area the Indian Archipelago. Some people call it the East Indies. Other names include Insulindia or Nusantara. Arab merchants once called it Jazirah Al-Jawi.

Nature in the archipelago is very special. The climate is tropical because it sits on the equator. This means it stays warm.

Alfred Wallace noticed a special line in this region. He called it the Wallace Line. This line separates the plants and animals of Asia from those of Australia. It runs through deep water straits. One strait is between Borneo and Sulawesi. Another is the Lombok Strait between Bali and Lombok.

The islands are grouped in different ways. In Indonesia, the major groups are the Maluku Islands, New Guinea, and the Sunda Islands. The Sunda Islands have two parts. These are the Greater Sunda Islands and the Lesser Sunda Islands. In the Philippines, the main groups are Luzon, Mindanao, and the Visayan Islands. The seven largest islands are New Guinea, Borneo, Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Java. Luzon and Mindanao are also among the largest.
