Mainland Australia is less than 500 km away from the island. The name Timor comes from the Malay word timur, which means east. This is because the island is at the eastern end of the Lesser Sunda Islands.

The island is divided into two different political parts. The eastern part is the nation of Timor-Leste. The western part is part of Indonesia and is called West Timor.

Over 3 million people live on the island in total. West Timor has about 2 million people in the East Nusa Tenggara province. Timor-Leste has a population of around 1.3 million people. There is also a small part of Timor-Leste called the Oecusse District located inside West Timor.

Timor has a very long history of trade and change. As early as the 13th century, Chinese records called the island Ti-wu. It was famous for its aromatic sandalwood. People also traded honey, wax, and slaves there. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Portuguese and the Dutch arrived. They fought for control for a long time. A treaty in 1859 finally divided the island between them.

The island has seen many difficult times during wars. During World War II, Japanese forces occupied the island in 1942. This period was very hard for the people living there. Many villages were burned and food was taken away. It is estimated that between 40,000 and 70,000 Timorese people died during the occupation. Later, Indonesia invaded East Timor in 1975. After many years of struggle, Timor-Leste became an independent country in 2002.

Nature and culture make the island very unique. The island has many high mountains that reach nearly 3000m. Ramelau is the highest peak in Timor-Leste, while Mutis is the highest in West Timor. Most people on the island, about 90%, follow Christianity.
