It stretches mostly from north to south. The southern tip is called Tanjung Piai. This spot is the southernmost point of the Asian mainland. Parts of the peninsula belong to three different countries. These are Peninsular Malaysia, Southern Thailand, and part of Myanmar. The island country of Singapore is also very close to this region.

Nature shapes the land in many interesting ways. The Titiwangsa Mountains run down the middle of the peninsula. These mountains act like a backbone for the whole area. They are part of a larger system called the Tenasserim Hills. The peninsula has a very narrow point called the Kra Isthmus. To the west, the Strait of Malacca separates the land from Sumatra. To the south, the Straits of Johor separate the coast from Singapore.

People have written about this place for a very long time. The Malay name for the land is Tanah Melayu. This name means "the Malay land." Old texts from the 17th century use this name. In the year 1365, a manuscript called the Negarakertagama called it Hujung Medini. Ancient Indian texts also mention a place called Malayadvipa. Travelers like Marco Polo and the geographer al-Idrisi wrote about the area too.

The peninsula is covered in lush, green tropical forests. Many different kinds of trees grow there. Some forests have trees that stay green all year. Others have trees that change with the seasons. These woods are home to many amazing animals. You might find an Asian elephant or a tiger there. Other animals include the sun bear and the Malayan tapir.

Large mangrove forests grow along the coasts as well.

Today, the peninsula is divided into many states and provinces. In Malaysia, there are states like Johor and Perak. Each state has its own capital city and leaders. For example, the capital of Johor is Johor Bahru. In Thailand, there are many southern provinces like Phuket and Krabi. The peninsula is a place where many different cultures and lands meet. It remains a very important part of the world.
