An archipelago is a special collection of islands.

You might call it an island chain or a cluster. These groups of islands can sit in a large ocean. They can also be found in a sea. Some groups sit near a big piece of land. Other groups are all alone in the deep water.

Exploring these places helps us see how our world is shaped.

Islands form in many different ways. Some are called oceanic islands. These start when volcanoes erupt from the bottom of the ocean. The Hawaiian Islands and the Galapagos Islands are good examples. Other islands are continental fragments. These were once part of a large continent. Natural disasters or moving glaciers can pull them away. The Farallon Islands near California are one such example.

There are even more ways that islands appear. Some are called coral cay archipelagos. These form when ocean currents move sand onto coral reefs. The Florida Keys are a famous example of this. Other islands are called continental islands. These sit on a continental shelf under the water. The Canadian Arctic Archipelago is a group like this.

People even build artificial archipelagos today. Dubai has islands made for tourism. The Netherlands is building islands for birds and wildlife.

History tells us where our words come from. The word archipelago comes from the Italian word arcipelago. This was once a name for the Aegean Sea. Later, people used the word for the Aegean Islands. Some people think it comes from Greek words. These words mean "chief sea."

It is interesting how a name for one sea became a name for many.

Some island groups are truly massive in size. The Archipelago Sea in Finland is the largest by number. It has about 40,000 islands. Most of these islands have no people on them.
