Some islands form from volcanoes. Other islands were once part of a big land. Then, they became separated. This can happen from natural disasters.

Some islands are made of coral. These grow on reefs in the water. People also build fake island groups. They do this for fun or for birds.

Finland has a very big group. It has 40,000 islands! Most of them have no people. Indonesia is a very large island group, too. It has many islands and many people.
