An archipelago is a group of islands.

You might call them an island chain or a cluster. These groups can sit in an ocean or a sea. The word comes from the Aegean Sea.

Long ago, people used the word to name that sea. Now, we use it for any group of islands.

Islands form in many ways. Some are oceanic islands. These form when volcanoes erupt from the ocean floor. The Hawaiian Islands are one example. Other islands are continental fragments. These were once part of a big continent. Natural disasters or moving ice can separate them. Some islands are coral cays. These grow on coral reefs.

Some people even make artificial archipelagos. These are man-made island groups. People in Dubai make them for fun. In the Netherlands, they build them for birds.

Some groups are truly huge. The Archipelago Sea in Finland has 40,000 islands. Most have no people living on them.
