Sunda Islands

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Sunda Islands are a group of islands. They sit in the Nusantara. This is a large group of islands in the sea. Five different countries share these islands. These lands are Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia. Most of the islands belong to Indonesia.

There are two main groups of islands. The first group is the Greater Sunda Islands. This group includes Borneo, Java, Sulawesi, and Sumatra. The second group is the Lesser Sunda Islands. These are smaller islands in the east. They include Bali, Lombok, and Flores. Other islands are Sumba, Komodo, and Timor.

The name Sunda comes from an old word. It means white. Long ago, a big volcano lived in West Java. Its name was Mount Sunda. It let out white ash. This ash covered the land. People think this gave the area its name. Scientists still use the name Sunda today. They use it to study the earth and the land.
