The Sunda Strait is a stretch of water in Indonesia.

It sits between the islands of Java and Sumatra. This water connects the Java Sea to the Indian Ocean. The map shows where it sits.

The strait has a unique shape. It looks like a triangle. It is very wide and deep at one end. It gets much shallower at the other end. This makes it hard for ships to sail through. There are strong currents and sandbanks under the water. Many large ships now use the Strait of Malacca instead.

Many islands sit in the strait. Many of these are volcanoes. One famous island is Krakatau. In 1883, Krakatau had a huge eruption. This event changed the land in the area. It also caused big waves called tsunamis.

Today, many people live along the coast.

People once thought about building a huge bridge here. This bridge would use several islands to connect the land. It would have a very long span. However, the government stopped these plans in 2014.
