The Sunda Strait is a busy stretch of water in Indonesia.

It sits between the islands of Java and Sumatra. This strait connects the Java Sea to the Indian Ocean. The name comes from the Sunda Kingdom. This kingdom ruled parts of Java from 669 to around 1579. The name also honors the Sundanese people. They are native to West Java and Banten.

The shape of the strait is roughly a triangle. It is very broad and deep at the southwest end. As it moves toward the northeast, it gets much shallower. The narrowest part is between Cape Tua on Sumatra and Cape Pujat on Java. This area can be very hard for ships to sail through. Strong tidal currents and sandbanks make it tricky. There are also man-made oil platforms near the Java coast. Because of this, many large ships use the Strait of Malacca instead.

Many islands are found within the strait. Many of these islands were made by volcanoes. One very famous group is the Krakatau Archipelago. It includes islands like Rakata, Sertung, and Lang. A new island called Anak Krakatau even emerged in 1927. Other islands in the water include Sangiang, Sebesi, and Sebuku. Some of these islands are part of Ujung Kulon National Park. This park protects land that was never resettled after big changes.

In 1883, the island of Krakatau had a massive eruption. This event changed the shape of the land forever. It sent out huge clouds of steam and ash. The eruption caused tsunamis, which are very large waves. These waves were very dangerous for people nearby. On the island of Sebesi, none of the 3,000 people survived. The eruption also spread a huge amount of volcanic material over a large area. Today, many people live along the coast again.

History has seen many big events in these waters. For a long time, it was a major shipping path. The Dutch East India Company used it to reach the Spice Islands. In 1942, a naval battle called the Battle of Sunda Strait happened here. There were also ideas to build a giant bridge across the water. This bridge would have used islands like Ular and Sangiang. It would have been much longer than the Çanakkale Bridge. However, the government stopped these bridge plans in 2014.
