Lampung is a province located in Indonesia. It sits on the southern tip of the island of Sumatra. To the east, the province meets the Java Sea. To the southeast, it touches the Sunda Strait. The province is home to many different islands. There are 172 named islands that belong to Lampung. Some of these islands, like Legundi and Tabuan, sit in the Bay of Lampung. Another island, Pisang Island, is located near West Lampung. One very famous island nearby is Krakatoa. This island is a volcanic caldera in the Sunda Strait. In 1883, Krakatoa had a very violent eruption. This event caused large waves and landslides in the coastal areas of Lampung.

The history of this area goes back many centuries. In the late 7th century, Lampung was part of the Srivijaya empire. Historians found stone inscriptions from around 680 CE in several villages. These stones show that the empire had settlements near the Sekampung River. Later, the Majapahit kingdom also had a presence here. During the colonial era, Lampung was known for growing pepper. In the 1930s, the region produced 30% of the world's pepper. Different powers, like the Banten Sultanate and the Dutch, all wanted to control this trade.

Many different groups of people live in Lampung today. The capital city is Bandar Lampung. The population is growing by more than 100,000 people every year. Official estimates for mid-2024 say there are 9,419,580 people living there. Most of these people are descendants of migrants from Java, Bali, and Sunda. These people moved to Lampung through a government program to find more land. Because of this, three-quarters of the population comes from those other islands.

The province is also part of a much larger country. It became its own official province on March 18, 1964. Before that, it was part of South Sumatra. Today, it is a busy place with many regencies and cities.
