The weather in Bengkulu is very wet. It has a tropical rainforest climate. This means it rains heavily all year long. Much of the land is low and can have swamps. Because the city is near the Sunda Fault, it can have earthquakes and tsunamis. In the year 2000, an earthquake near Enggano killed at least 100 people. Another series of earthquakes happened in September 2007 and killed 13 people.

Bengkulu has a very long history. The British East India Company founded the city in 1685. They wanted it to be a center for trade. The British built Fort Marlborough in 1714. For a long time, the British stayed there to trade spices. Later, they gave the land to the Dutch in 1824. Sukarno, who became the first president of Indonesia, lived here in exile. He lived in Bengkulu from 1939 to 1942. He even met his wife, Fatmawati, while he was there.

Many people live in the city today. In 2024, about 397,321 people lived there. This included 200,601 males and 196,720 females. The city covers an area of 151.70 square kilometers. It is divided into nine different districts. Some districts are quite large, like Selebar. Other districts are much smaller, like Teluk Segara. People use many ways to get around the city. They can ride in taxis, mini-vans called angkot, or motorcycle taxis called ojek.
