The city has a very long and busy history. A traveler named Marco Polo visited the area in 1292. Back then, the place was known as Lambri. Later, a traveler named Ibn Battuta visited in the mid-14th century. The city was once the capital of the powerful Sultanate of Aceh. It was called Bandar Aceh Darussalam during that time. The name "Bandar" comes from a Persian word meaning port or haven. Because pilgrims stopped there on sea journeys to Mecca, people called it the "port to Mecca."

In 1873, the Dutch declared war on Aceh and attacked the capital. The city also faced a huge disaster on December 26, 2004. A massive 9.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra. This earthquake caused a giant wave called a tsunami. The tsunami hit the city very hard and destroyed over 60% of its buildings.
