It sits between the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea. Singapore is on the north side of the water. The Riau Islands of Indonesia are to the south.

The two countries share a border in the sea. Many small islands sit within the strait.

One island is named Kusu Island.

This waterway is a very important route for ships. In 2017, about 2,000 merchant ships sailed here every day. The water is deep enough for the Port of Singapore. This helps many large ships pass through.

Because it is so busy, there can be some trouble. In 2025, there was a big rise in piracy. Piracy is when people commit crimes on ships. Some ships faced armed robberies or had parts stolen. This makes the strait a place that needs much care.
