geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Japan is a land of many islands. It is an archipelago. This means it is a group of islands. Japan sits in East Asia. It is near the Pacific coast. It stretches from the Sea of Okhotsk to the East China Sea. It also reaches the Philippine Sea. There are 14,125 islands in all. Most are very small. Only 430 islands have people living on them.

Some islands are much larger than others. People call the big ones the mainland. These are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Honshu is the largest island. You can find five main islands from north to south. They are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa.

The islands sit in three long lines. These are called island arcs. They are the Northeastern Japan Arc. There is also the Southwestern Japan Arc. The third is the Ryukyu Island Arc. Japan is a very big island country. It is the fourth largest in the world. It has a very large area of sea around it. This is called an exclusive economic zone.
