Nine of these islands have people living on them. The largest island is Izu Oshima. It has 8,472 people. The smallest inhabited island is Toshima. It has only 292 people.

These islands were made by volcanoes. Because of this, volcanic activity happens often. In the year 2000, people had to leave Miyakejima. This was because of gas from a volcano. They were able to move back in 2005. Now, they carry gas masks just in case.

Many people visit the islands for fun. They like to go swimming and surfing. Others go fishing or bird watching. You can reach the islands by boat or plane. A flight from Tokyo takes about 30 minutes. A boat trip can take 7 to 10 hours. Some people use fast boats called jetfoils. These take about two hours to arrive.
