Amakusa is a group of islands in Japan.

These islands sit off the west coast of Kyushu. The Yatsushiro Sea separates the islands from Kumamoto Prefecture.

The largest island is named Shimoshima. It is 26.5 miles long. The land is very hilly and rugged. There are not many high mountains here. Because there is little flat land, farmers use terraces. These are like giant steps built into the hills.

Amakusa is famous for its pottery.

Potters use local stones and clay to make it. Some of this pottery is sent to other places.

It is easy to travel around. You can fly into Amakusa Airfield.

You can also use ferries to reach the islands. Five bridges connect the islands to the mainland. Ferries also run to nearby places like Nagasaki. Long ago, some people practiced their faith in secret here. This happened after a rebellion in the 17th century.
