These islands sit off the west coast of Kyushu. Kyushu is the southernmost of the four main islands in Japan. The Yatsushiro Sea sits between the islands and Kumamoto Prefecture.

The largest island in this group is called Shimoshima. It is 26.5 miles long and 13.5 miles wide. The land there is very rugged and hilly. Only four peaks rise higher than 1,300 feet.

Because the land is so hilly, it is hard to farm. There is not much flat land for crops. Farmers use a terrace system to grow food. These are like giant steps built into the hills. This way, they can use the slopes for cultivation. The islands also have useful natural resources. They produce a little bit of coal. They also have pottery stone found in the ground.

Amakusa has a very interesting history. In the 17th century, a rebellion happened here. This was called the Shimabara rebellion. It was led by Christians in this area. After the rebellion, life was difficult for them. Many people were persecuted for their faith. Some Christians, called Kakure Kirishitan, stayed in Amakusa. They continued to practice their faith in secret.

Potters use local clay and special stones. They use these materials to make Hirado ware and Satsuma ware. Amakusa pottery is so special that the government recognizes it. Some companies even use ground Amakusa stones for home goods. Many kilns, which are ovens for pottery, still work today. People still export this pottery to other places.

It is easy to visit the islands by land or sea. You can fly into the Amakusa Airfield.

Five bridges connect the islands to the mainland. You can also take a ferry to get around. Ferries run from Hondo and Matsushima. Some boats go to Nagasaki or Kagoshima Prefecture. The Shimabara Railway runs an hourly ferry from Oniike to Kuchinotsu. This makes it easy to travel between many places.
