Kii Channel

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Kii Channel is a special sea path in Japan.

It is also called the Kii Strait. This water sits between two large pieces of land. One side is the island of Shikoku. The other side is the Kii Peninsula. This peninsula is part of the main island called Honshū. The channel is a very important link for the sea. It connects the Inland Sea to the vast Pacific Ocean.

Water moves through this area in many ways. The channel connects to Osaka Bay through the Kitan Strait. It also reaches Harima Nada. This area is the eastern part of the Inland Sea. Another path is the Naruto Strait. This strait helps the water flow between different areas.

These paths make the channel a busy part of the sea. It links many different coastal areas together.

The name of this place has a long history. It comes from the old Kii Province. This province used to be on the Kii Peninsula.

In the 1800s, people used different names. Western maps from the 19th century called it the Linschoten Strait. This shows how people have studied this water for a long time. The name has changed as maps became more modern.

Many different places surround the Kii Channel. On the island of Shikoku, you will find Tokushima Prefecture. On the island of Honshū, you will find Wakayama Prefecture. The southern coast of Awaji Island is also nearby. This island sits in Hyōgo Prefecture.

Part of the channel is even inside a protected area. This area is called Setonaikai National Park. It helps keep the water and land safe.

You can think of the channel as a watery bridge. It joins many parts of Japan together. It connects the small islands to the big main island. The water moves from the calm Inland Sea to the wide Pacific Ocean. This makes it a very important spot for the geography of the country.

It is a place where different seas and lands meet.
