Nature and history are very important here. Much of the land is part of beautiful natural parks. These include the Setonaikai and Yoshino-Kumano National Parks. Many people visit the Kii Mountain Range to see sacred sites. These sites are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can find ancient Buddhist temples tucked away in the mountains. These temples sit among very tall cedar trees. The Kumano Shrines are located at the southern tip of the prefecture.

Agriculture is a big part of life in Wakayama. The prefecture is famous for growing fruit. It ranks first in Japan for producing oranges. In the Arida District, farmers grow a special kind called Arida-Orange. This district has been growing oranges for more than 400 years. Wakayama also grows the most Chinese flowering plums, or ume, in Japan. In 2016, the area produced about 70 percent of all ume in the country.

People live in many different cities and towns throughout the land. Wakayama is the capital and the largest city. It has a population of about 360,664 people. Other major cities include Tanabe, Hashimoto, and Kinokawa.
