It sits on the southwestern part of Shikoku island. The land faces the large Pacific Ocean to the south. It shares borders with Ehime to the northwest. It also touches Tokushima to the northeast. Kōchi is the largest prefecture on Shikoku. However, it has the smallest population of the four prefectures there. As of April 2023, about 669,516 people live here.

Most of this land is very mountainous. In fact, 89% of Kōchi is covered by mountains. This is much higher than the national average of 66%. Because of these hills, there are many rivers. The Shimanto River is one of the most famous. It is special because it is one of the few rivers in Japan without dams. Other big rivers include the Niyodo and the Yoshino. The highest peak in the prefecture is Mt. Miune at 1,894 meters.

Kōchi has a very long history. Long ago, it was known as Tosa Province. Early governments in the area were called Hata and Tosa. In the year 684, an earthquake caused damage in the region. Later, many different groups ruled the land. The Chōsokabe clan ruled during the Sengoku period. The Yamauchi clan ruled during the Edo period. Kōchi City is also the birthplace of Sakamoto Ryōma. He was a famous man who helped change Japan during the Meiji Restoration.

The weather in Kōchi is shaped by the ocean. A warm stream of water called the Kuroshio Current flows by the coast. This keeps the water warm even in the winter. However, this warm water also brings many typhoons. Kōchi sees the second most typhoons in all of Japan. One very famous storm was the 1934 Muroto Typhoon. It had a very low pressure of 911.6 hPa. The capes of Ashizuri and Muroto are known for having strong winds.
