It is the sixth largest island in the whole country. The island has a very symmetrical shape. Two mountain ranges run across it from the southwest to the northeast. These mountains enclose a large, flat area called the Kuninaka plain. Most people live on this central plain.

The island also has a humid climate. This means the summers can be hot and wet. The winters are often quite cold.

In the past, Sado was a place for exile. Being sent to the island was a very serious punishment. People were sent there because they had done something wrong or were difficult to manage. They were not expected to ever return home. A poet was sent to the island in the year 722. Later, a famous Buddhist monk named Nichiren lived there from 1271 to 1274.

You can still visit places where he lived or meditated today. There is even a tall memorial built to remember him. The last person sent into exile on the island was in the year 1700.

History changed on the island in the year 1601. This was when people discovered gold at Aikawa.

Finding gold caused a sudden economic boom for the area. The mines became a major source of money for the government. Working in the mines was very hard work. The conditions were often quite severe for the people there. Because there were not enough workers, many homeless people were sent to the island to work. The settlement of Aikawa grew very large during this time. It reached a population of about 100,000 people. The mines finally closed in 1989.

Today, Sado is a place where many people go to visit.

This town has streets that look like they did in the old days. Many visitors enjoy the fresh local food and outdoor activities. The island is also known for artists who make beautiful bamboo weavings. There is even a big music festival called Earth Celebration. It is run by a famous drumming group called Kodo.

Nature is also a very important part of life on Sado.

The island is a famous home for the Japanese crested ibis. These birds are a major symbol of the island. A long time ago, the last Japan-born ibis died in 2003. However, people are working hard to bring them back. They use birds from China to help start a new group. Since 2008, these birds have been released into the wild. By June 2022, about 480 ibises were seen on the island. This shows that the hard work to save them is working.
