The name Kanazawa means "marsh of gold." A famous legend explains this name. It tells of a man named Imohori Togoro. He was a peasant digging for potatoes in the ground. While he worked, flakes of gold washed up in the marsh.

There is a well in Kenroku-en garden that honors these roots.

Long ago, the city grew because of strong leaders. During the Sengoku period, the area changed hands many times. In 1582, a man named Maeda Toshiie took control. He started the Kaga Domain.

By the year 1600, the Maeda clan became very powerful. They ruled from Kanazawa Castle for a long time. They even built a huge domain worth 1.2 million koku.

The Maeda family helped the city grow very fast. They built a large castle and planned the streets carefully.

In 1632, they built a canal to bring water from the Sai River. This helped solve water shortages at the castle. They also moved a river to make more land for people.
