There are also several islands nearby, such as Notojima and Mitsukejima. Much of the land is protected in natural parks. These include the Hakusan National Park and several other local parks.

History tells us that Ishikawa was formed in 1872. It was made by joining Kaga Province and Noto Province together. At first, the government sat in a place called Mikawa. However, the political center moved to Kanazawa in 1873.

The area was once very wealthy during the Japanese feudal era. It contained some of the strongest lands, known as han. In 1878, a difficult event called the Kioizaka Incident happened. This led the national government to divide the prefecture into smaller parts between 1881 and 1883.

Today, Kanazawa is the capital and the largest city in the prefecture.
