The geography of Ishikawa is quite diverse. The northern section features the narrow Noto Peninsula. This landform helps create Toyama Bay. This bay is one of the largest in Japan. The southern part of the prefecture is much wider. This area consists mostly of mountains. The capital city, Kanazawa, sits on a coastal plain. Ishikawa also includes several islands. These include Notojima, Mitsukejima, and Hegurajima. About 13% of the land is protected in natural parks. These include Hakusan National Park and the Echizen-Kaga Kaigan and Noto Hantō Quasi-national parks.

History shows that Ishikawa was formed in 1872. It was created by merging Kaga Province and Noto Province. The government seat was originally in Mikawa. However, the political center moved to Kanazawa in 1873.

During the Japanese feudal era, this area was very important. It contained some of the wealthiest han, or domains. In 1878, a major event called the Kioizaka Incident occurred. Six people assassinated the statesman Ōkubo Toshimichi. This happened because they were dissatisfied with the Meiji government. The national government feared a Hokuriku bloc might form. They wanted to weaken the influence of the former Kaga lords. Consequently, the government divided the prefecture. Fukui Prefecture was formed in 1881. Toyama Prefecture was formed in 1883.

The economy of Ishikawa relies on several major industries. The textile industry is a dominant force here. This includes the production of artificial fabrics. The machine industry is also very important. This sector focuses heavily on construction machinery. Many people live in cities like Kanazawa, Hakusan, Komatsu, and Kaga. Kanazawa is the largest city and the capital. Other municipalities include Nonoichi, Nanao, Suzu, and Hakui. The prefecture also uses several airports, such as Komatsu and Noto airports.

Ishikawa is world-renowned for its rich cultural traditions. It is famous for many specific arts and crafts. Kutani ware is a type of brightly colored glaze. It is similar to Chinese porcelain. The area also produces Ohi teaware, which is unique to Kanazawa. Another specialty is Kanazawa gold leaf. This is made by beating gold into wafer-thin sheets. Kaga silk, or Kaga yūzen, uses a complicated printing technique. This technique creates an intentional rough look called wabi-sabi. The region is also known for Kanazawa lacquerware. This high-quality lacquer is often decorated with gold dust. Even food has local traditions, such as Nyotaimori, or naked sushi.

Tourism is a major part of life in Ishikawa. Many visitors come to see the famous Kenroku-en garden. This is one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan.

Recently, the prefecture has faced significant natural challenges. On 1 January 2024, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck. The earthquake specifically hit the Noto Peninsula. This event caused 508 deaths in Ishikawa. At least 2 people were reported missing. Across different prefectures, an estimated 1,200 people were injured. In September 2024, the region experienced severe rainfall. This led to deadly floods and landslides. These floods caused at least six deaths. The damage was widespread across the prefecture. Recovery efforts were made more difficult by the previous earthquake. Emergency warnings have remained a part of life during these times.
